Actaeon

Actaeon the hunter was turned into a stag and killed by his own hounds.

Ovid's Metamorphoses describes how Actaeon, whilst out hunting, accidentally disturbed the goddess Artemis and her nymphs as they were bathing in a lake.  Furious that he had seen her naked, Artemis turned Actaeon into a stag.  He was pursued and killed by his own hounds.

In another, less popular, version of the story, Artemis turned Actaeon into a stag because he boasted that his skill in hunting exceeded hers.
